An exorcism is the casting out of demons or evil spirits from an individual thought to be possessed through an elaborate ritual performed by an exorcist. In Catholicism, a formal exorcism is conducted by a trained priest who invokes the name of Jesus Christ through prayer, biblical text, amulets, symbols, and other tools in attempt to expel the demon.
