1.0 The Hebrew Bible in Context

1.0.1 Overview

In this module, we will explore how ancient Near Eastern and biblical scholars use archaeology, the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and other ancient Near Eastern texts, artifacts, and iconography to build their understanding of what life was like in ancient times. We will begin with a brief history of both ancient Israel and the ancient Near East, then discuss the various sources we have, how ancient Near Eastern studies shed light on the Hebrew Bible, how scholars interpret texts and archaeological remains to reconstruct a history of lost civilizations, and some of the challenges scholars face.
