The Faust legend is a German myth about a scholar named Dr. Faustus who made a pact with the devil (Mephistopheles) to exchange his soul for knowledge and worldly success. The legend first became popular with Christopher Marlow’s Doctor Faustus published in 1592 and later in 1808 with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s play Faust.
